01
Overview
The ductus arteriosus connects the pulmonary artery and aorta during fetal life. Persistent patency after birth can cause a left-to-right shunt.
02
Clinical Features
Significant PDA may produce tachypnea, feeding difficulty, poor growth, or heart failure.
A continuous murmur, bounding pulses, and widened pulse pressure are classic findings.
03
Investigation
Echocardiography confirms the duct and determines its haemodynamic significance.
04
Management
Management depends on age and clinical setting. Selected lesions can be closed pharmacologically, surgically, or by catheter intervention.
05
Clinical Pearls
REMEMBER
Continuous murmur + bounding pulse is the classic PDA combination.
